Iranti is a planet steeped in mystery; a landscape etched with the echoes of civilizations long past. Every overgrown ruin whispers of those who came before, and hints at what eventually spelled their end.

Once home to the enigmatic and powerful Anterior, Iranti has since witnessed the rise and fall of multiple alien cultures, each leaving its own indelible mark on the planet's surface. Today, life flourishes in the ruins of the past, and new explorers, scavengers, and settlers seek to uncover Iranti’s secrets.

Legacy of the Anterior

Millions of years ago, Iranti was inhabited by a species known as the Anterior. Little is known about these precursors — only their monolithic ruins and fragments of inexplicable technology remain.

Towering cyclopean obelisks, massive subterranean vaults, and impossible geometric structures dot the landscape. Some of their relics still hum with dormant energy, defying scientific analysis. Whether the Anterior perished, ascended to some higher plane, or simply abandoned Iranti remains one of the greatest mysteries in the galaxy today.

A persistent feature of the Anterior is their fascination with and mastery over the science of memory. Many of their artifacts are able to record and transfer memory from nearby creatures, seemingly at will. The ubiquity of this trait across otherwise unrelated artifacts have led many to speculate that it had a decorative significance to the Anterior — a craftsman etching their feelings and experience into their work, in the same way a human artisan would surmount a corinthian column with acanthus leaves.

Interestingly, the wide availability of transcribed Anterior memories has done little to illuminate details of their civilization. Whether these memories have degraded over time, or are merely incompatible with human sensory experience, they are usually fragmentary and impressionistic, communicating vague images and alien emotions, but little information of substance.

The Four Eras of Iranti

There is evidence to suggest that Iranti has undergone countless cycles of civilization’s rise and fall. Certainly, the oldest Anterior ruins date to millions, or possibly billions of years — ample time for whole species to evolve, thrive, and perish.

Nonetheless, the known and recent history of Iranti covers a few dozen millennia, and can be described in terms of four key eras.

The Colonial Era

Millennia ago, Iranti and its rich trove of Anterior history represented a contested prize for numerous starfaring cultures. Multiple species vied for dominance, establishing outposts and settlements amidst a bewildering convolution of overlapping and conflicting treaties and charters.

Expeditionary forces waged proxy wars, mining colonies fortified themselves against hostile takeover, and scientific enclaves jealously guarded their findings. Despite the chaos, Iranti became a melting pot of alien cultures, each carving out a tenuous foothold on its surface.

The Hive Era

Amidst the factious jockeying of the Colonial Era, one party eventually rose to prominence above all others. The Karyaptes, an insectoid race with a tightly regimented caste system, and advanced understanding of bioengineering and infrastructure, emerged within a few hundred years as the dominant force on Iranti.

Through superior adaptation and ruthless efficiency, the Karyaptes pushed out the other colonial forces and built a thriving civilization. Towering hive-cities resembling colossal termite mounds came to dominate the Irantian skyline.

These organic mega-structures extended deep underground, housing millions of Karyaptes and their brood. Space elevators, woven from bio-engineered fibers, connected the summit of each hive to orbital platforms high above. Under Karyaptes rule, Iranti became an industrial and technological marvel — but their empire would not last.

The Fallen Era

One of the key traits that allowed the Karyaptes to achieve dominance on Iranti was the strict order and unquestioning loyalty of their caste civilization.

As a species evolved for hive society, each Karyaptes found it right and natural to accept their role without complaint, and each hive worked towards the greater benefit of the Karyaptes as a whole.

However, at some point during the Hive Era this began to change. Individual drones began to display new eccentricities and discontent, and factional disputes between hives emerged for the first time in millennia. There is no definitive explanation for this shift, but a popular theory attributes it to the influence of the Anterior — downloaded memories planting the seeds of rebellion that would erupt into full-scale war.

The final cataclysm left Iranti’s surface scarred — entire regions were transformed into radioactive wastelands, and once-thriving hive-cities were reduced to skeletal husks. The mighty skyhooks collapsed, laying waste to thousands of kilometres.

The once-powerful Karyaptes fell into ruin, their numbers dwindling to scattered, feral remnants. Those few who survived became nomads, struggling against a world they had nearly destroyed.

The Rampant Era

Now, Iranti has entered an era of untamed resurgence. With the fall of civilization, nature has reclaimed the planet. Towering jungles of iridescent flora grow unchecked over the ruins, and bizarre new species have adapted to the changed world.

Gigantic fungi sprout from the wreckage of the hive-cities, glowing with bioluminescent spores. Vast rivers of shimmering, phosphorescent algae cut through the landscape. Mutated creatures, both beautiful and monstrous, roam freely. The remnants of past civilizations lie hidden beneath dense canopies and shifting sands, waiting to be rediscovered.

Though the Karyaptes' rule is over, scattered pockets of survivors still persist, some guarding the ruins of their old empire, others worshiping their lost civilization. New explorers, scavengers, and settlers from across the galaxy have returned to Iranti, lured by the treasures hidden within its ruins. The world is dangerous, but rich with opportunity.
